In all European countries, as in the United Kingdom, a basic level of insurance cover is obligitary if you intend to drive LHD cars on the road, so it is important that if you intend to buy a car abroad that that insurance cover is arranged beforehand.
Some insurance companies will no longer accept left hand drive cars, or if they do, the policy cost can be expensive, certainly more than you would pay for an equivalent right hand drive car. It is also difficult to find insurance cover for vehicle use during an extended part time residency abroad if the car, whether rhd or lhd, is registered in another country. It appears that there has been an increase in the number of claims involving left hand drive cars especially in the UK. Below are several Insurance Companies who specify that they will insure a left hand drive. Some of these companies also offer loans and finance for buying LHD cars. Remember to disclose all relevant information when applying for insurance or loans.

When you buy a left hand drive car in most EU Countries, the dealer can provide vehicle insurance cover with export plates, which will then give the car a temporary registration number. Depending on which country, these plates can last for up to 14 days and longer, meaning that you can incorporate a short vacation at the same time, or get the car through its MOT before the plates expire.

However, to use the export plates the vehicle must be roadworthy and have a current safety inspection (TUV in Germany, APK in the Netherlands, MOT in the UK). The plates include road tax and the car insurance, which will give minimum road risk cover only. The longer the period of cover and use of the plates, the more expensive the cost. For 7 days cover it will cost approximately 200 euros, again depending from which country you are buying the car from.

Export plates are recognised throughout all EU Countries, so you should not get a problem with customs or the police.
|

If you buy privately, again the seller should be able to ask the registration authority for export plates.
|
|
|

In Germany and Belgium, the original registration plates will have been removed from the vehicle as they belong to the owner. In the UK and France, the original registration plates stay on the car. In Holland the plates are unique to the car, but must be returned to the registration authorities before export plates are issued.

Use of UK trade plates are not legal outside of the UK. The car wlll not be covered for insurance purposes if there is an accident.

To pay for your newly purchased LHD car, safest method is to physically collect the car yourself and pay cash on collection, once the car and registration or export document is safely tranfered over to you. If you do not want to use large amounts of cash, transfering money via bank can be carried out on the same day by urgent transfer. However, this cannot always be done from banks located in the UK, so you would need to open an account in the country from where you intend to buy the car from. Most of the banks in the Netherlands offer urgent transfer facilities and once funds are in place from your home country account, transfers can be carried out swiftly, not only to Holland, but to Germany, Belgium, France, or wherever. Additionally, regarding the Dutch banks, you will find that the staff are helpful and English should be no problem. Try the Rabobank, ING or ABN Amro. From these banks, you should be able to carry out a money transfer on the same or next day.
